Carotenoids
-
Whereas beta-carotene has received more attention than other carotenoids, early research documenting the effects of high beta-carotene diets overlooked the fact that these diets were also high in other carotenoids (J Am Coll Nutr 1995;14:419-27).
-
High doses of beta-carotene alone may reduce blood levels of other carotenoids (Am J Clin Nutr 2000; 71:950-5).
-
All carotenoids have antioxidant activity, but some are deposited preferentially into specific body tissues, as in the affinity of lutein for the retina (Ann NY Acad Sci 1998;854:443-7; Int J Vitam Nutr Res 1998;68:349-53).
-
Synthetic beta-carotene has failed to benefit health in several human clinical trials (Drug Saf 1999;21:253-66), whereas natural beta-carotene was studied in two trials with positive results (J Am Coll Nutr 1995;14:536 [abstr #48]; Ann Allergy Asthma Immunol 1999;82:549-53).
-
Provitamin A carotenoids such as alpha- and beta-carotene represent excellent sources of vitamin A with no danger of vitamin A toxicity (Arch Biochem Biophys 2004;430:77-88).
-
Lycopene, one of the most abundant carotenoids in the body, has been associated in human studies with optimum immune function (Proc Nutr Soc 1998;57:3A) and prostate health (Nutr Cancer 1999;33:159-64; Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2001;10:861–8).
-
The xanthophylls, lutein and zeaxanthin, may play a special role in the health of the eyes; studies have found that their long-term intake appeared to support the health of the macula and the ocular lens (Optometry 2004;75:216-30; Nutrition 2003;19:21-4).
-
Alpha-carotene and cryptoxanthin appear to confer preferential protection to lung tissue (J Natl Cancer Inst 1996;88:612-5; Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2001; 10:767-73).

Universal antioxidant supporting healthy glucose metabolism, nerve and eye tissues
Product # 6106 |
60 capsules |
gelatin |
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) plays a key role in energy metabolism and acts as a multifunctional antioxidant in both water
and lipid-soluble domains. ALA has been used for years in Europe for its ability to support normal glucose regulation and
nerve and eye function. ALA also functions as a key intermediate in oxidative decarboxylation for energy producing reactions,
and it facilitates enhanced antioxidant potential with glutathione, ascorbic acid and vitamin E.
-
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is often referred to as the “universal” antioxidant because it is both fat and water-soluble,
it combats a wide variety of free radical reactions, and because it can regenerate other antioxidants back to their
active state (Gen Pharmacol 1997;29:315-31; Free Rad Biol Med 1995;19:227-250).
-
ALA is well-documented in human clinical research for its ability to support normal nerve function (Exp Clin Endocrinol
Diabetes 1999; 107:421-30). ALA supplements also have direct benefits for blood sugar regulation according to human
research (Diabetes Care 1999;22:280-7; Free Radic Biol Med 1999;27:309–14).
-
Antioxidant protection of the eyes by ALA has been reported in both human (Vestn Oftalmol 1995;111:6-8) and animal
(Biochem Biophys Res Commun 1996;221:422-429) studies.
-
Animal research demonstrates that ALA can protect tissues from the damaging effects of oxygen deprivation (Brain
Res 1996;717:184-188).

Hypoallergenic vitamin C with bioflavonoids
Product # 1204 |
90 tablets |
|
C-Plex, a non-corn based ascorbic acid with bioflavonoid concentrate, is a perfect hypoallergenic choice for
supplementation with the vitamin C complex. Flavonoids such as rutin and hesperidin as well as those from citrus sources
frequently occur with vitamin C in nature, and appear to improve its bioavailability and complement its actions in the
body. Flavonoids are useful in their own right as antioxidants and stabilizers of vascular permeability and capillary
integrity. C-Plex includes generous amounts of flavonoids, unlike many other vitamin C complex formulas.
-
See Vitamin Formulas.
-
Bioflavonoids and vitamin C have been used in human studies to facilitate normal reparative activities in various
body tissues (Med Times 1962;90:529-32; Med Times 1960;88: 313-314).
-
Flavonoids such as rutin and hesperidin, often combined with vitamin C, support normal vascular permeability and
healthy capillary integrity (Int Angiol 1994;13:259–62; Int Angiol 1993;12:69–72; Delaware State Med J 1959;Jan:19–22;

Lipid-soluble coenzyme Q-10 for support of mitochondrial function
Product # 6101 |
60 capsules |
softgel |
Coenzyme Q-10 occurs in cellular mitochondria throughout the body and is essential to their function and for ATP
production. The areas of highest energy metabolism, including the heart and skeletal muscle, depend heavily on CoQ-10 for
normal function and antioxidant protection. CoQ-10 levels decline with aging, and endogenous synthesis levels can also
fall behind during times of high energy output, as well as in some disease states. A rapidly growing body of research has
confirmed the participation of CoQ-10 in maintenance of blood pressure homeostasis, cardiovascular and brain function,
and oral tissue health.
-
Karuna CoQ-10 products are encapsulated in softgels which contain a lipid-soluble medium that helps maximize the
absorption and utilization of Q-10.
-
Tissue depletion of CoQ10 levels by statin medications and red yeast rice suggest it would be prudent for patients
using these agents to supplement with a small amount of CoQ10 (Ann Pharmacother 2006;40:290-4).

emphasizes that CoQ-10 needs a lipid-soluble medium for greater absorption and bioavailability. Note the selection of
milligram amounts and softgel capsule counts for dosing flexibility.
-
Increasingly, higher doses of coenzyme Q-10 are being shown to have superior effects. This formulation provides
100 mg per capsule, necessary in particular to achieve doses for optimal cellular health, immune system activity
(Biochem Biophys Res Commun 1995;212:172-7), and normal heart (Am J Cardiol 1985; 56:247; Clin Investig 1993;71:S134-6)

90 capsules |
softgel |
Vitamin E is the primary lipid-soluble antioxidant in human biology, required for free radical protection of structures
having high lipid content such as cell and organelle membranes, lipoprotein particles, and the central nervous system
environment. Clinical research has discovered specific functions of vitamin E for supporting immunocompetence, optimal
circulation and joint health. E-400 is a natural extract and supplies not only the primary alpha-tocopherol vitamer, but
also the beta-, delta-, and gamma-vitamers, in order to more closely match the variety of forms found in the diet. E-400
is also unesterified, making it suitable for external use as well.
-
Vitamin E is the primary lipid-soluble antioxidant found in the body.
-
Natural vitamin E may be as much as twice as bioavailable as synthetic E (Am J Clin Nutr 1994;60:397-402).
-
Vitamin E supplementation may support optimal protective high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol level in some
individuals (Isr J Med Sci 1987;23:869–72), and reduce the susceptibility of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)
cholesterol to oxidation (Arterioscler Thromb 1993; 13:1779–89).
-
Vitamin E and other antioxidant micronutrients help maintain immunocompetence, especially in populations at risk
such as the elderly (JAMA 1997;277:1380–6).
-
Antioxidant or other functions of vitamin E apparently have beneficial influences on joint health (Z Orthop 1986;124:340–3;
Z Rheumatol 1990; 49:369–73).
-
Clinical research has demonstrated that vitamin E supplements support healthy circulation in the lower extremities,
which helps maintain normal walking endurance in the elderly (Int Clin Nutr Rev 1984;4: 178–82).

Standardized extract containing oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs)
Product # 5109 |
60 capsules |
 |
Grape Seed Extract provides a cost-effective concentrate of oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs). OPCs are natural
antioxidants but they also possess unique properties such as stabilizing and maintaining connective tissue integrity.
Since connective tissue forms the basement membrane of body structures as diverse as eye tissues and blood vessels, OPCs
have the potential to support clear vision, cardiovascular health, and normal interstitial fluid balance.
-
Grape Seed Extract provides a cost-effective concentrate of grape seed flavonoids (GSFs), including oligomeric
proanthocyanidins (OPCs), upon which this extract is standardized.
-
Human research has documented the ability of grape seed extract supplements to boost total antioxidant activity
measurable in the blood (J Clin Pharm Ther 1998;23:385-9) and to provide greater protection than combinations of
other antioxidant nutrients (Ann N Y Acad Sci 2002;957:260-70).
-
GSFs depress the activity of collagenase, the enzyme that degrades collagen, and have tonic effects on the
capillaries and veins (Arzneimittelforschung 1994;44:592-601; Gazette Medicale 1985;92:96-100).
-
Grape seed extract prevents changes in capillary permeability that could lead to accumulated fluid in the
interstitial tissues (Ann Chir Polast Esthet 1984;29:393–5).
-
The combination of antioxidant and connective tissue stabilizing effects of OPCs may be responsible for evidence
of improved visual function in human studies of grape seed extract (Fitoterapia 1995;LXVI:291-317).
-
GSFs have been shown by some studies to be among the protective agents in wine that provide wine-drinking
populations with excellent cardiovascular health, in spite of diets rich in saturated fats and cholesterol
(Clin Chim Acta 1996;246(1-2):163-82).
-
GSFs have been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol oxidation and maintain normal arterial blood flow capacity in
animal studies (Atherosclerosis 1999;142:139-49).
-
A water extraction method of concentrating the grape seeds assures that no solvent residues remain after processing.

Powerful antioxidant support with a high potency green tea extract of 50% polyphenols
Product # 5110 |
90 capsules |
 |
Green Tea extract provides a standardized and extremely potent source of the catechin/polyphenol antioxidants, which
have dramatically more free radical-quenching effects than other antioxidants. Research continues to indicate their promise
for protecting structures such as membrane lipids and DNA as well as numerous tissues such as skin, joint cartilage, liver,
neurons, and the cardiovascular system.
-
The potent catechin/polyphenol antioxidants in green tea have been shown to protect fatty acids from free radical
damage 20–200 times more efficiently than vitamin E (Cancer Lett 2000;153:1-5; Prev Med 1992;21:520-5).
-
Green tea contains polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which possess powerful antioxidant
properties having numerous promising clinical applications (Prev Med 1992;21:334-50).
-
High intake of green tea polyphenols is associated with good cardiovascular health (Ann Epidemiol 2000;10:401-8),
liver health (BMJ 1995;310:693-6) and protection of DNA (Mutat Res 2002;512:37-65).
-
Laboratory studies demonstrate that green tea polyphenols help protect cartilage by inhibiting proteoglycan and
cartilage breakdown (J Nutr 2002;132:341-6; Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A 1999;96:4524-9) and blocking undesirable
prostaglandin formation (Ann Nutr Metab 2004;48:151-5).
-
Green tea polyphenols can protect neurons from oxidation and apoptosis (Life Sci 2001;70:603-14).

Mixed Carotenoids is a broad spectrum carotenoid supplement containing natural alpha- and beta-carotenes combined with
lutein, lycopene, zeaxanthin and cryptoxanthin. All carotenoids have antioxidant activity, but their activities vary
depending on which tissues they are deposited into preferentially. Mixed carotenoid supplements protect against imbalances
caused by excessive intake of only one member of this diverse phytonutrient family.
-
Refer to Carotenoids above.
-
Recent large dietary studies have suggested that intake of several carotenoids is associated with more powerful
protection for cellular health than is the intake of single members of the carotenoid family (Am J Epidemiol 2002;156:536-547; Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev 2000;9:357-365).

 |
Oxidative stress contributes significantly to the pathogenesis of common eye disorders in older Americans.
OcuPlus is a broad spectrum formula combining antioxidant nutrients and botanicals associated with protection of eye
structures.
-
Individuals with low plasma concentrations of carotenoids and antioxidant vitamins are at increased risk for
undesirable age-related changes in the eyes; carotenoids and antioxidant vitamins may help to retard some of these
destructive processes (Am J Clin Nutr 1995 Dec;62:1448S-1461S).
-
The xanthophylls, lutein and zeaxanthin, may play a special role in the health of the eyes; studies have found
that their long-term intake appeared to support the health of the macula and the ocular lens
(Optometry 2004;75:216-30; Nutrition 2003;19:21-4).
-
The flavonoid quercetin inhibits aldose reductase, which may reduce accumulation of sorbitol byproducts in the
ocular lens (Biochem Pharm 1976;25:2505-2513).
-
Bilberry is high in anthocyanoside flavonoids that possess potent antioxidant activity, and show promise in
protecting eye tissues from oxidative damage (Ann Ottamol Clin Ocul 1989;115:109; Ann Ottalmol Clin Ocul 1987;113:1173–7).
-
Ginkgo biloba extract has an antioxidant, free-radical scavenger effect on the retina; it inhibits or reduces
damage caused by oxidative insults (Int J Tissue React 1995;17:93-100).
-
Taurine, a conditionally-essential sulfur amino acid, is found in high concentration in the retina, where
it participates in photoreceptor function and provides protection from lipid peroxidation (Neurochem Res 2004;29:151-60; Nutr Rev 1975;33:343-7).

OxyGuard provides a broad and synergistic spectrum of antioxidant activity. Antioxidants work best in combination,
helping to regenerate one another. Combinations also avoid the potential for depletion of some antioxidants, particularly
carotenoids, which may occur if a balanced mix is not used. Vitamins C, E, and selenium appear to be particularly
synergistic. The addition of natural mixed carotenoids, and quercetin further improves the radical quenching effect of
OxyGuard.
-
Refer to Carotenoids above.
-
OxyGuard’s formula includes natural-source beta carotene, alpha carotene, lutein, lycopene and other carotenoids
balanced much as they occur in a diet of natural foods.
-
OxyGuard contains a highly bioavailable form of selenium (J Nutr Sci Vitaminol 1999;45:119–28) that has been
associated with impressive health protective effects in human studies (JAMA 1996;276:1957–63; Eur J Cancer 2000;36:694-709).
-
Quercetin, an antioxidant from the flavonoid family, increases the free radical scavenging ability of the blood
(Free Radic Res 1999;31 Suppl:S75-80) and is associated with coronary vascular health (BMJ 1996;312:478-81).

OxyPro is formulated with a base of free radical-quenching nutrients, plus additional vitamins, trace minerals and
amino acids required for activation of the radical-scavenging enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase
(GPx). This formula offers a more reliable approach to antioxidant enzyme support than enzyme-containing formulas having
questionable absorption.

Refer to Carotenoids above.
-
Natural beta-carotene possesses superior antioxidant activity compared to the synthetic beta-carotene more
commonly found in vitamin supplements (Amer J Clin Nutr 1996;63:729-34).
-
In a controlled trial, a combination of supplemental beta-carotene and vitamins A, C and E helped protect myocardial tissue
from the effects of ischemia (Am J Cardiol 1996;77:232-6).
-
Zinc, copper and manganese are required for activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the enzyme responsible for
scavenging harmful free radicals (FASEB J 1987;1:441-5). Superoxide dismutase itself is not effectively absorbed
as an oral supplement (Am J Clin Nutr 1983; 37:5-7; Biopharm Drug Dispos 1996; 17:165-74).
-
Selenium, the mineral activator of glutathione peroxidase, has been associated with cardioprotective effects (Int J
Epidemiol 1990;19:918-22) and other long-term health benefits (J Natl Cancer Inst 1998; 90:1219-24).
-
N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine, L-methionine, and glutathione are sulfur amino acids that participate in antioxidant mechanisms
utilizing donor electrons available on sulfur atoms (Clin Sports Med 1999;18:525-36; Altern Med Rev 1998;3:114-27).

In nature, vitamin E is a complex of eight molecular forms, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols; members of each
group are identified as alpha, beta, delta, or gamma. Tocotrienols are also antioxidants, but are distinguished from
tocopherols by several unique biochemical effects, including down regulation of HMG-CoA reductase (HMGCR), the key
enzyme in cholesterol synthesis. Through antioxidant protection of lipoproteins and maintenance of healthy cholesterol
regulation, tocotrienols help ensure optimal vascular capacity and blood flow. Tocotrienols also promote cellular
health by inducing apoptosis, the natural mechanism of cellular growth control, in certain human cells. Karuna’s
Tocotrienols is a balanced blend of both mixed tocotrienols and mixed tocopherols, the most complete vitamin E complex
there is.
-
Tocotrienols inhibit the rate-limiting enzyme of cholesterol biosynthesis (HMG-CoA reductase) and may thus support
healthy blood cholesterol levels (Nutr Biochem 1997;8:290-8; J Med Chem 1992;35:3595-606); Am J Clin Nutr 1991;53:1021S–6S).
-
Supplementary tocotrienols exert antioxidant effects in humans and help stabilize arterial capacity for normal
blood flow (Lipids 1995;30: 1179-83).
-
Tocotrienols induce apoptosis in certain human cells. Apoptosis is the natural mechanism of cellular growth
control (Nutr Cancer 1999;33:26-32).
